This article will tell you everything you need to know for getting a great residency headshot.

Let’s review the residency headshot requirements, shall we?

  • Resolution: 150dpi

  • File Size: 100kb max

  • Photo must be in color and must have a full view of your head and shoulders

Medical residency headshots in New Orleans. A Checklist!

While most smartphones are capable of so much, it’s worth getting your photos done professionally for so many reasons. A professional headshot photographer will give you access to professional quality backdrops that compliment you (i.e. avoid washing out your skin tone, being to distracting, or making you look like a floating head with a white shirt on a white background) and professional editing software to touch up any imperfections afterwards such as flyaway hairs or blotchy skin.

The headshot you submit will be viewed along with your application, sometimes on a large scale while several people discuss whether or not to accept you. The first impressions people make based on your photo are made in about one tenth of a second, so your appearance matters in a big way. Everyone who sees your photo will immediately make judgements about your personality and professionalism based on it, and these judgements will affect who accepts you and where you get placed.

A good rule of thumb is to wear what you would to an interview in your headshot; which is to say: business attire. For men keep your facial hair well groomed if you have it and women should leave their hair down. To prepare, drink lots of water before your headshot to help you look alert and well rested. For more detailed tips, check out my Headshot Checklist! In addition to looking professional, you also want to look friendly and approachable, so try for a relaxed smile, this isn’t a passport photo after all, you want to look like someone enjoyable to work with!

I’m sure you’ve already looked at the 2019-2020 ERAS timeline dozens of times, but here’s a reminder in case you’ve forgotten: You can start submitting your applications on the MyERAS website on September 5th at 9am Eastern Time. On September 15th at the same time, residency programs begin accessing applications, and registration for the National Resident Matching Program® (aka “the Match”) opens at 12:00pm Eastern Time. You probably already new that, but did you know that ERAS Support Services highly recommend submitting all documents by September 7th to ensure your application is available to be viewed on the 15th? So get going on that checklist!
